Grain-Fed vs. Grass-Fed Beef: What’s the Difference?

Buying beef from a rancher? One of the first questions you’ll hear is “Grain-fed or grass-fed?” Good news: neither one is better. They’re just different, and each gives you a different steak. This quick guide shows what changes, so you can pick the one you’ll enjoy most.

01 / First, a secret

Do All Cattle Eat Grass?

Nearly every beef calf grows up on pasture with its mother. The difference is the last few months, called finishing. Grain-finished cattle get corn or other grain at the end. Grass-finished cattle eat only grass and hay their whole lives.

That yellow fat comes from the beta-carotene in grass. It’s natural and perfectly safe.

03 / Health

Is Grass-Fed Beef Healthier?

Grass-finished beef is a bit leaner, with a little more omega-3. Both are a great source of protein, iron and zinc.

04 / The price gap

Why Does Grass-Fed Beef Cost More?

Grass-finished costs more mostly because the cattle take longer to raise. Buying a share straight from a rancher can narrow the gap. See our beef price comparison for the full math.

05 / Honest answer

How Do I Choose?

Buy a pound of ground beef of each and hold a taste test at home. If you’re used to store beef, give grass-finished a meal or two.

What Should I Ask My Rancher?

  • “What do your cattle eat in the last few months?”
  • “About how much take-home meat comes from a half?”
  • “Is your price based on hanging weight or take-home weight?”
