How Much Freezer Space Do I Need?
- About 130 lb of beef
- Upright: 5.5 cu ft
- About 260 lb of beef
- Upright: about 11 cu ft
- About 520 lb of beef
- Upright: about 22 cu ft
These are ABF planning figures for a larger quarter of about 130 lb of packaged beef. We doubled them for a half and doubled again for a whole. Treat them as minimums with no room to spare.

02 / Side by side
Chest or Upright Freezer?
- Holds more beef per cubic foot
- Packages stack flat
- Digging for the roast at the bottom
- Best for a half or whole
- Shelves waste some space
- Easier to see what you have
- Grab and go, no digging
- Fine for a quarter
03 / Your numbers
How Do I Size My Freezer?
Ask your rancher, “About how many pounds will I take home?” Then:
- Chest freezer: take-home pounds ÷ 30 = cubic feet
- Upright freezer: take-home pounds ÷ 25 = cubic feet
Example
220 lb of beef
That’s about 7.5 cubic feet in a chest freezer or 9 in an upright.
Don’t use the hanging weight here. You take home much less than that. Hanging weight explained.

Common Questions
Will a quarter fit in my kitchen freezer?
Sometimes. Check the cubic feet on the label, then subtract what’s already in there. For a half or more, plan on a chest freezer.
Can I split a half with a friend?
Yes. Each of you then needs space for a quarter.
How long does it keep?
At 0°F, frozen beef stays safe indefinitely. For best taste, USDA suggests eating steaks and roasts within 4–12 months and ground beef within 3–4 months. Eat the ground beef first.
What if the power goes out?
Keep the lid shut. USDA says a full freezer holds about 2 days, a half-full one about 1.
